If You Value Your Eyes, Only Buy Optical Quality Reading Glasses

Of all the five senses, many agree that sight is the most treasured. Our eyes are the way we take in life most deeply and richly.

Many people discover they need their vision corrected at an early age. A teacher might notice that a child is struggling with making out what is written on the board or a coach may observe some hand-eye-coordination difficulties. The parents are notified and the child is taken to an eye doctor to discern whether they have far- or nearsightedness (hyperopia and myopia, respectively) and whether they need eyeglasses. This can often occur later in life as well, and if you or your child are being treated by a qualified professional you can rest assured that you will be receiving the best quality eyeglasses or contacts.

However, nearly everyone, at some point or another, develops what is called presbyopia. This usually occurs later in life, when the natural hardening of the eye’s disc prevents it from focusing properly. In this case, as with hyperopia and myopia, glasses are still called for. The good news, though, is that these glasses can be purchased over-the-counter. That said, the quality of reading glasses varies and you want to make sure the product you purchase is going to correct the problem consistently.

The Importance of Optical Quality Lenses

The most important thing you’ll want to check is that the lenses in question are specifically “optical quality,” as these are guaranteed to be free of blemishes that can cause strain and damage to the eye. If you’re at the point in your life at which reading glasses become an integral commodity, don’t be fooled into purchasing cheaply manufactured products, as they may cause more damage than benefit in the long run.

Some eyewear manufacturers assume consumers don’t know the difference and profit from this, charging the same amount for glasses with inferior, even potentially counterproductive lenses as companies who provide optical quality reading glasses. To be positive the glasses you purchase are well-made, be sure to only buy from FDA-approved companies that are members of the US Vision Council.
